Two-Way Traffic Begins Downtown Today

It's been talked about for years, actively in the works for months, and as of this morning it's finally happened; downtown St. Catharines has eliminated one-way traffic.

St. Paul and King, the two main streets that run parallel through the downtown core, have been one way streets for as long as most of us can remember. Over the years as public interest in downtown excursions declined it was argued by some that the one way streets were a deterrent to those unfamiliar with the area. People, it has been said, would avoid downtown altogether so that they wouldn't have to deal with one way streets. A crazy thought, but not without merit.

While I was personally a fan of the old system, I look forward to seeing what impact the change might have. The next few years are looking bright for those interested in downtown revitalization. Two way traffic is just the first step towards that new future.

Have you had a chance to tackle the new road directions? What did you think? Was it strange heading westward down St. Paul?

I had a chance to drive down St. Paul and turning from Ontario is quite odd. They need to add lines pdq as everyone seems tentive in their driving. My main concern is with the traffic now being one way what will happen to all the delivery trucks that congested the area? Will they still block the one lane of traffic to drop off their goods?
