Thanksgiving should be a time to be thankful -- so why are Niagara's food bank shelves bare?

A disturbing report out of the St. Catharines Standard this week. Turns out that Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold has 14,850 kilograms less food on it's shelves than it did this time last year -- that's enough food to supplement the eating needs of 1200 families. And this thanksgiving? There wasn't a single turkey to give away.

I know that times are tough, and I know that right now we all have to look out for ourselves -- but a can of soup, a box of cereal -- just one more item out of budget than you'd been planning on dropped in the Community Care bin at your grocery store could do a world of good. Every fall I reorganize my kitchen cupboards, and if there's something in there I know I'll never eat, I put it in a bag and bring it on down. If you're looking for something to do next weekend, why not do the same?
