Still no word on what caused last week's blackout

vancouver_power_out0715.jpg Last Wednesday a funny thing happened. St. Catharines ran out of power. A call to Horizon Utilities showed that they were as dumbfounded as we were. "HydroOne cut us off. We don't really know what's going on," I was told by a customer service rep shortly after the outage began. Now more than a week later, there are still very few answers.

More than 50,000 people were affected by the outage. Some were trapped in elevators. Others had their surgeries delayed. It was an ugly situation all around, and it lasted more than an hour. The St. Catharines Standard is reporting that "power to St. Catharines' main hydro line was somehow disturbed, shutting down three out of four transmission stations," but the reasons behind this are unknown.

Could it happen again? Could it happen for longer? Here's to hoping we get some answers so we'll know that this isn't going to become a regular thing.
