SCMP; St. Catharines Mounted Police?

Now this is a strange sight. Driving around on my daily errands today I came across something I'd not seen in my 28 years living here -- a mounted police officer. Luckily I had my trusty camera in my pocket and I was able to snap a quick shot before the light changed!

Doing a little detective work of my own netted some basic of information. Here's the skinny according to from FNMP.org, Friends of Niagara Mounted Police;

The NRPS introduced mounted officers to its ceremonial Colour Guard in the spring of 2003. The officers attend parades, ceremonies, and special events. With a peninsula full of tourist attractions, parks, and an ever-growing list of festivals and parades, we feel that the citizens and visitors of the Niagara Region benefit immensely from a mounted police presence. The officers also help to fulfil the NRPS commitment to community policing and education by appearing at schools and other institutions across the Niagara Region.

The site also explains that the mounted police units are funded and maintained not from NRPS budget, but from volunteers and donations. To find out how you can help, visit FNMP.org.
