Ground breaks on new hospital April 28th

It's been a long time coming, and it's seen a lot of debate, but it looks like our new hospital is finally going to be built. Ground officially breaks for the new health care complex on April 28th, 2009. Replacing the current St. Catharines General Hospital and now closed Hotel Dieu, the new facility is expected to open in 2013.

The new site is set to play host to the Walker Family Cancer Centre, the first of its kind in Niagara. The estimated 1200 or so cancer patients residing in Niagara will no longer need to make the long haul to Hamilton or Toronto for radiation treatment. Other new features include a longer-term mental health facility, cardiac catheterization services, and the further development of dialysis services.

Groundbreaking will occur at the corner of First Ave and Fourth St in West St. Catharines, 2pm, April 28th, 2009. Shuttles to the event will be available at the Seymour-Hannah Sports Complex at 240 St. Paul St. W.
