I like movies. I like breakfast. Thankfully, St. Catharines has a diner where I can enjoy my love of both.
Formerly a part of the Wimpy's chain of 50's style diners, Lester D's tweaked the motif to showcase a love of movies in place of rock'n'roll nostalgia. Classic movie posters from cult hits like The Goonies and Plan 9 adorn the walls, beautifully framed. A TV by the entrance plays movies non-stop. A wipe-board at the front door has movie reviews written by the staff of the latest Hollywood blockbusters. The whole place has a vibe that just warms the cockles of any film geeks heart.
The movie-love transcends the environment and makes its way to every nook and cranny of the experience, right down to the menu. Every order is a pun or a movie reference. Their vegetable wrap? "Nobody puts Veggies in the Corner." Their giant breakfast offering? "The Kong."
Table-top advertising promises milkshakes as good as Jack Rabbit Slims, and believe me, they deliver. But this article isn't about their tasty rest-of-the-day offerings, it's about their breakfast. And while their breakfast menu offers up a really good selection, there's only one word that matters to me: Trilogy.
Their Trilogy Breakfast (inspired by the Indy films if the advertising is to be believed) lets you choose your own adventure. For $3.49, you can pick any 3 items from their breakfast menu and make them into a meal of your choosing. Toast, bacon, sausage, homefries, eggs... the list goes on and on. It's a staple in my breakfast adventuring, and something I'd definitely recommend everyone make the journey to try.
Lester D's Reel Diner, located at the corner of Hartzel and Admiral, is a sublime brekky experience for those who love delicious food at terrific prices.
