Fantastic Plastic and Evil Dreams @ the NAC

Want to take a walk down memory lane? Local multimedia artist Marinko Jareb has assembled a fun and colourful window display for the Niagara Artists Centre that he calls Fantastic Plastic and Evil Dreams.

FP&ED features a collection of vintage toys from and tiny trinkets from recent days gone past. From the artists mouth (courtesy of the NAC website);

“I was inspired by the juxtaposition of fantastic colour with the dark side of children’s toys; the monsters and murderous heroes that one can find in any children’s toy department.”, Says Marinko from his home studio in St. Catharines. “I have been designing characters and toys for some time and I’m working to have my own limited edition designer toy. I want to create them from old vinyl records. I’ve made my own comics and ‘zines for years and have produced many video animations but I would ultimately like to see my creations in 3-D.

I wanted it to have the kind of impact that I imagined a toy store window on a downtown street in the 1950’s would have had on children walking by and peering in to have a closer look. It’s a social commentary about notions of play and how there is a dark side to some children’s imaginations. Stylistically, the installation is influenced by contemporary urban folk art, concrete poetry, and space age pop art but it’s abstract and playful and not too serious.”

The window display is on now.
